Established in 2006, the Women in Math and Science Club at The Ohio State University was created to unite women with similar interests, promote academic success and well-being, and establish a supportive personal and professional network. This organization provides support for undergraduate women in mathematics and the sciences by inviting successful women in STEM to speak, holding social events, and providing outreach to encourage young girls to study science and to demonstrate that there is not a standard type of person who can do science.
WIMS is proud to partner with the Girl Scouts of Ohio’s Heartland to put on an annual event to help spark an interest at a young age in STEM subjects in our future physicians, engineers, scientists, and mathematicians. “Detective for a Day” puts the girls’ problem-solving skills to the test as they attempt to solve a mystery using math, science, and technology.
This event is hosted every Spring at The Ohio State University’s Ohio Union. More information, including details on registration, can be found on the GSOH website.
In addition to our "Detective for a Day" event, WIMS offers smaller-scale outreach programs that introduce STEM topics in a fun, interactive manner at Columbus-area libraries, schools, and after-school programs. Please feel free to reach out if your organization is interested in hosting WIMS for a program.
WIMS meets several times throughout the autumn and spring semesters. A typical meeting consists of a more laid-back, social part with announcements and board-run programming at the beginning of the meeting, followed by the presentation, talk, and/or activity of a guest speaker.
